What legacy?

The opportunity to develop music teaching in particular and the teaching of all creative subjects in general within secondary education has been lost. We have been shown a Cultural Olympiad this summer and there has been much made of the legacy of this summer’s Olympics.

What legacy?

The Schools Music Association (SMA) which has condemned the previously suggested reforms of the GCSE, is now concerned that the latest government proposals to introduce the Ebacc will effectively mean the end of the teaching of creative subjects in secondary schools. The present proposals will increase pressure on pupils to study the six areas of maths, English, sciences, languages and humanities.

There is NO mention of Music, NO mention of technology, NO mention of design.

The United Kingdom is known internationally for its offerings in these fields. The creative economy contributes up to 10% of the GDP. Our music education system is considered world class, and envied across the world.

Imagine the ceremonies for the Olympics and Paralympics without the contribution of the designers, musicians, dancers and artists.

SMA supports the comments of the Incorporated Society of Musicians and its Chief Executive, Deborah Annetts of 18 September to be found at http://www.ism.org/news/press .

SMA supports the comments of Dr James Garnett of the National Association of Music educators about the necessity to keep music assessment musical, and to allow each child a full rounded education of 18 September to be found at http://www.name.org.uk/node/3693

The report details the findings based on evidence provided by Local Authorities on November 30th 2011 in order to draw down their second instalment of the Music Education Grant (2011/2012).

The data relates to the actual numbers of young people involved in music making during the academic year 2010/2011 and projected figures for the academic year 2011/2012 as at November 30th 2011.

A further report is planned for May 2012 to provide updated figures for 2011/2012, which will be able to further inform policies and plans for 2012 to 2015.
